Threading – Toddler play at 22 – 23 months
Stringing small items like beads/cheerios onto a string/shoelace makes a great fine motor activity for toddlers.
I first tried this activity with cheerios. I placed a handful of cheerios in a bowl and showed my boys how to string them onto a shoelace. My little munchkins observed kneely. I happily handed over the bowl of cheerios to my boys expecting them to follow the activity and before I could realize, they had already gobbled the cheerios I get it – stringing cheerios is not going to work! LOL!
I was planning to use beads but Aadhi still loves to taste (and test ofcourse!) everything that he plays with. So, for safety purposes I avoided beads/uncooked pasta for this activity.
Finally, I decided to use the measuring spoons. Boys loved nesting measuring spoons at around 16-19 months. It is a toy that they have already played with.
I placed the measuring spoons before them and showed how to string shoelace into the hole in the spoon handle .
Here is Aadhu busy stringing the spoons
I love his concentration!
