Preschool Math – Counting game

I started to teach numbers and counting to Skandha a year back when he was around 18 months old. It took him just few weeks to recognize and associate the numbers with sounds. After he turned two we started the counting exercise. Our counting games were always fun – counting the veggies on the dining table as I chopped them, counting books that we got from library, counting cars on the road etc! Now at 33 months, Skandha can count till 20 and knows numbers till 100. Thanks to the free worksheets available on the net, we practice at least one everyday.

I thought of playing a simple maths game. My preschooler totally loved it.

I collected few items that he generally plays with/loves to eat. Drew a simple matrix (on his table) and kept the items in each cell. I placed the number cards in a basket.

Game rule:  Skandhu had to count the items in each cell (order doesn’t matter) and search for the corresponding number in the basket. Once he finds the number he has to place it in the cell. Shuffle the items and play again (if the kid is interested)

Aim: To learn to count. Recognize the number and place it properly.

Must admit: This was a fun game but LO solved it in couple of minutes.
